Mathematical Thinking in Engineering Design: Insights from a Cognitive Engineering Perspective
While mathematics is considered to be a fundamental element of engineering education, little empirical research has been conducted to characterize the role of mathematics in the engineering design process. The goal of this project is to take a research informed approach towards understanding the role of mathematics in engineering design. More specifically, this project's aim is to understand how engineering students and practicing engineers use mathematics (and mathematical thinking) while engaged in conceptual design. This presentation presents some evidence of engineering students' use of mathematical thinking elicited through observations, interviews and verbal protocol analysis
